Vinted, Depop or eBay: Where Should You Sell?
If you have something to sell, you have more good options than ever - and that’s exactly the problem. List a jacket on the wrong platform and it can sit for months; list it on the right one and it’s gone by the weekend. Here’s an honest look at where each marketplace shines, and how to stop guessing.
The short version
- eBay is the everything store: biggest audience, best for electronics, collectables, parts, branded goods and anything a buyer might search for by model number.
- Vinted is where everyday clothes actually sell: fast, casual, high volume at lower price points, and postage is refreshingly simple.
- Depop is fashion-led: streetwear, vintage, Y2K, one-off pieces with a look. Presentation matters more here than anywhere else.
- Facebook Marketplace wins for local and bulky: furniture, prams, exercise equipment - anything where collection beats postage.
eBay: reach and search intent
eBay’s superpower is buyer intent. People arrive searching for something specific - “Levi’s 501 W34 L32”, “Dyson V8 battery” - and your job is to match that search. That’s why titles and item specifics matter so much on eBay, and why it rewards detail-heavy listings.
For private sellers in the UK, eBay has also become dramatically cheaper to use in recent years, with selling fees removed across most categories. Fee structures do change, so it’s always worth a glance at the current fee page before you price anything - but the days of losing a tenth of every sale are largely gone.
Best for: electronics, branded goods, collectables, spare parts, anything searchable by model or specification.
Vinted: volume and simplicity
Vinted flipped the usual model: sellers typically pay nothing, and the buyer pays a small protection fee on top of the price. Combined with integrated, drop-off postage labels, it’s the lowest-friction platform for moving clothes in volume.
The trade-off is price. Vinted buyers are bargain hunters, and mid-range items often sell for less than they would on eBay or Depop. But what you lose per item you often make back in speed and sheer throughput - listing takes a minute, and everyday brands genuinely sell.
Best for: everyday fashion, kidswear, high-street brands, clearing a wardrobe quickly.
Depop: presentation and identity
Depop is closer to Instagram than to eBay. Buyers browse as much as they search, and styling matters: good photos on a clean background, an outfit shot, a description that sounds like a person rather than a spec sheet. Hashtags and a consistent shop aesthetic genuinely move the needle.
If your item has a look - vintage denim, band tees, statement pieces - Depop buyers will pay for it. If it’s a plain M&S jumper, Vinted will serve you better.
Best for: streetwear, vintage, festival fashion, anything with an aesthetic.
Facebook Marketplace: local and large
No postage, no packaging, no printer. For anything heavy, fragile or cheap-per-kilo, collection is the only model that makes sense, and Facebook Marketplace owns that space. Listings are informal, buyers message instantly, and deals conclude in days.
The etiquette is different: expect haggling, expect no-shows, and write your listing for a local skim-reader - lead with what it is, the price and the collection area.
Best for: furniture, appliances, baby equipment, bikes, garden gear.
The real answer: stop choosing
Here’s the thing experienced sellers eventually work out: these audiences barely overlap. The person searching eBay for your camera model is not scrolling Vinted, and the Depop teenager hunting vintage Adidas is not browsing Facebook Marketplace.
Cross-listing the same item on two or three platforms routinely cuts time-to-sale dramatically - not because any single platform improved, but because you multiplied your audience. The only real costs are the extra writing time (each platform wants a different tone and format) and the discipline to delist everywhere the moment it sells.
That first cost is exactly what we built SellFaster to remove. The second one is on you - set a reminder.
